Robert Burtons Printing & Packaging: Dick Smith Electronics case study
Client: Dick Smith Electronics and Tandy
The Challenge: Dick Smith is a household name in the Australian electrical goods marketplace. Every month, the head office design team in Sydney creates the in-store Point of Sale and merchandising that will be rolled out to all stores nationwide – an enormous project that includes everything from posters, shelf wobblers, shelf talkers, header cards and price tags to the constantly changing promotions and giveaways that the retailer uses to keep its brands front-of-mind among consumers.
The entire merchandising production process – printing, assembly and dispatch – was outsourced to five separate suppliers. Not only did coordinating this huge operation become increasingly time consuming as the number of retail outlets grew, but it was hard to guarantee a consistently high standard of print quality and service delivery from all the suppliers.
Robert Burtons Printing and Packaging Solutions:
It made sense to bring all elements of the Dick Smith merchandising operation under one roof – and Robert Burtons Printing and Packaging’s one-stop print production, logistics fulfill ment and distribution shop provided the ideal solution.
Bringing the project together under one roof gave the Dick Smith team huge economies of scale, resulting in significant time and cost savings and a stress-free process, as well as added flexibility for their design team.
The Results:
By outsourcing their complete Point of Sale and merchandising print production cycle to Robert Burtons Printing and Packaging, Dick Smith enjoyed a range of benefits.
Firstly, the print cycle was reduced by a whole week, giving the design team more time to perfect their ideas as well as the flexibility to add extra items into the merchandising kit at short notice.
The print quality of the clients’ material improved significantly and, crucially, standardised across the range. And perhaps most importantly, the Robert Burtons team produced a substantial cost saving.

Storm Creative case study
Client: Storm Creative
The Challenge:
Storm Creative is a Sydney-based graphic design agency that offers its mostly corporate clients a simple, streamlined approach to graphic design, packaging design and branding. One of Storm Creative’s points of difference is its dedication to finding the right designer for each client, then committing them to the entire design process – a simple strategy that ensures the best possible results.
The company won a prestigious commission from an international alcohol company to design packaging for a miniature Tequila bottle that could be attached to a full-sized bottle. The design had to be consistent with that of the renowned parent brand, while being fun, creative, durable and easy to assemble and affix.
Robert Burtons Printing and Packaging Solutions:
The challenge for the Robert Burtons design team was to find a way of making the new retail packaging stand out on the shelf without straying too far from the established branding; to be distinctive, without contradicting the parent brand’s core message. A key priority was to maintain consistency – both between the packaging of the two bottles, and within the major marketing campaign of which this project was a part.
With Robert Burtons’ many years of experience in retail packaging solutions and up-to-the-minute production techniques, we were able to work closely with Storm Creative to develop packaging that was not only durable, practical and attractive but also consistent with their client’s major marketing campaign.
The Results:
‘Working with the Robert Burtons team on this project was very rewarding,’ said the Storm Creative designer on the project. ‘Because they understand the latest production techniques and everything the industry has to offer, we were able to collaborate easily to produce packaging that had aesthetic appeal, shelf presence and durability.
‘Our clients were very happy with the end results – not just because they were exactly what they wanted, but because the final product increased the sales for this promotion. As a result, the product has been reprinted several times. That’s the end result that both we and our client were hoping for.’

Robert Burtons Printing & Packaging: VitaMan case study
Client: VitaMan | Natural Grooming for Men
The Challenge:
In her role as Director and Co-Founder of premium men’s grooming range VitaMan, Clare Matthews was unhappy with her printing and packaging contractors. Their results were patchy, with inconsistent colour reproduction and frequently poor quality packaging materials. Clare believed that VitaMan – voted the number one male grooming brand at the 2005 Beauty Challenge Awards in Paris – was being let down by its own appearance. In an industry dedicated to beauty, she was concerned about how poor packaging was affecting her brand.
When Clare approached Robert Burtons Printing & Packaging, her goals were to:
- Cut through the cluttered beauty product market with sophisticated packaging designed specifically to appeal to men.
- Communicate prestige and exclusivity in line with their premium brand.
Robert Burtons’ Solutions:
After ten years of frustration and disappointment, Clare was understandably reluctant to road-test yet another packaging and printing business – until a professional recommendation lead her to Robert Burtons Printing & Packaging. Managing Director David Hawkes met Clare personally to discuss her needs.
Clare wanted to be confident she would receive consistent, top-quality packaging across products and print runs.
Together, Clare and David adjusted the design of the packaging to achieve:
- A detailed needs analysis with VitaMan’s packaging designer.
- A packaging redesign aimed at maximising a high-end result.
The Results:
Today, Robert Burtons continues to deliver VitaMan with:
- Packaging that always meets highly specific colour needs and is consistent across the entire range and over multiple print runs
- Uniformly high quality products
- Fast turnaround.
‘It has been a joy to find your company, and to continually receive boxes we are so happy with,’ Clare says. With the improved quality and reliability that Robert Burton’s Printing & Packaging delivers, VitaMan recently won a lucrative contract to provide products to Hilton Hotel guests worldwide.
And it is a measure of Clare’s faith in Robert Burtons’ results that she no longer checks her print proofs!
